July 23, 1829: American William Austin Burt files a patent for a machine called The Typographer, which will be the ancestor of the typewriter.
July 23, 1963: France refuses to join the Moscow Treaty. This treaty, limiting nuclear testing, will be signed the following August 5 by the USSR, the United States and the United Kingdom.
July 23, 1945: The trial of Marshal Pétain begins before the High Court of Justice for high treason. He will be sentenced to death on the following August 15, as well as to national degradation and confiscation of all his assets. He will die in prison on July 23, 1951.
