The origins of the Wimbledon tournament date back to 1877, when the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, located in the Wimbledon district of London, decided to hold a tournament to raise funds for repairing its lawn roller equipment. At the time, tennis was a new sport, popularized under the name "lawn tennis." The first tournament ran from July 9 to 16, 1877 and was men's-only, with 22 players taking part. The winner, Spencer Gore, became the first Wimbledon champion, in front of a few hundred spectators.
