Skiing and Winter Sports

Calendar of events for the year 2026

The Alpine Skiing World Cup is an annual competition made up of a series of races in different alpine skiing disciplines, such as slalom, giant slalom, super-G, downhill and combined. These races are held at various locations around the world throughout the ski season. In the World Cup, skiers accumulate points based on their performance in each race. At the end of the season, the skier with the most points in each discipline is crowned World Cup champion for that discipline. There is also an overall title for the skier with the most points across all disciplines combined. Participation in the World Cup is based on qualification, which depends on skiers' past performances and rankings.

The Alpine Skiing World Championships, on the other hand, take place every two years and form a single event lasting around two weeks. Unlike the World Cup, the World Championships bring together all alpine skiing disciplines in a single location. Instead of the points system used in the World Cup, the World Championships work like a traditional tournament, with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded for each event. National teams select the skiers who will take part, often based on their World Cup performances and other criteria set by national federations.

In terms of prestige and media attention, both competitions are closely followed by skiing fans. However, the World Cup, taking place over a longer period, can see public interest vary from one event to the next. The World Championships, on the other hand, attract concentrated attention during the two weeks of competition, due to their more condensed format and the gathering of the world's best athletes in a single event.
