Traditionally, The Boat Race is held in late March or early April. The 4.2-mile course (approximately 6.8 kilometers) runs between Putney and Mortlake on the River Thames in London. This stretch of the river was chosen for its technical challenges and variable conditions, adding a strategic element to the competition.
The origin of The Boat Race dates back to 1829, when two childhood friends, Charles Merivale of Cambridge and Charles Wordsworth of Oxford, decided to organize a rowing race between their respective universities. Since that first encounter, the competition has taken place almost every year, becoming a tradition firmly rooted in British sporting heritage. Over the decades, The Boat Race has been through major historical periods, surviving both World Wars and adapting to social and technological changes.
Each team, or "crew", is made up of eight rowers and a cox, the latter being responsible for navigation and strategy during the race. Participants are selected from among university students, through a rigorous selection process that begins several months before the event.
