Mardi Gras falls on a Tuesday in February or in early March. It precedes Easter by forty-seven days. This festive period is followed by Ash Wednesday and Lent, during which Christians must abstain from eating meat.
The origin of Mardi Gras dates back to the Roman feast of the Calends of March, which celebrated the awakening of nature. Today it is a Christian feast that marks the entry into Lent.
For Christians, Mardi Gras marks the opening of Easter. It is customary to eat crêpes, waffles, and doughnuts on Mardi Gras. The carnival tradition is linked to Lent. It is a period when people celebrate before the forty days of privation of Lent.
